The Bigueñong Christmas
The
Christmas Season here in Vigan City is not different with other provinces in
our country. Here in Vigan we call Merry Christmas as “Naimbag a Paskua”. In
our town, we like to celebrate it with our love ones. We also like to socialize
and play games with our neighbors. Usually we would go to one house and we eat
our Noche Buena there. Of course, we bring our share for our Noche Buena.
However, that was all before COVID-19 happen. To be safe this season, our
government made strict protocols for all of us. Now let us go during the
pandemic. How did we celebrate Christmas as a bigueño? Is it the same as it used
to be, before the pandemic?
It has been almost 3 years since
the pandemic started, that means that we encountered two Christmas Season
during this crisis. In Vigan City, we light up parols to make sure the vibe of
Christmas is still present. In the center part of the city, we can see
different Christmas decorations scattered everywhere. Tourist Attractions also
adds Christmas decorations for us to enjoy more with the site of our
attractions. Before December 25th streets in Vigan City is bustling with
cars and people trying to buy gifts for their love ones. Supermarkets and
Groceries are pack with people shopping and buying for Noche Buena goods. We
bigueños
are religious, but since the pandemic started, we really cannot go to churches
since the spread of the virus is fast. In order for us to attend a mass, our
barangay called a priest to give us a mass. Bigueños also love music, we often
blast Christmas related songs in our speakers. Our tradition and culture as a
Bigueño
really unites during this season. This season can really bring joy and
happiness to our lives.
COVID-19 may close our doors in
doing the original Christmas gala we used to be. But this pandemic showed us
that no matter what happen as long as you feel the spirit of Christmas in you.
We may be in lockdown but the spirit of Christmas does not fade away. The past
2 years maybe different but the love and joy that we experience every year is
still there.
