Sure na Sure, Ilocos Sur: Kannawidan Festival

 

Ilocos Sur a province located in the northern part of the Philippines. It comprises of 32 municipalities and 2 cities. Ilocos Sur became a province since in 1818. The reason why we have the festival so called “Kannawidan” is that we commemorate the separation of two Ilocos provinces. The season where we start the festival is very joyful and full of excitement. Kannawidan Festival is an annual festival, which is placed to start every end of January. A festival were its celebrated with joy, and a festival full of colors and wonders.

            During this festival, it usually celebrated in 2 weeks. Before the pandemic we usually have a food fair, and trade fair where different provinces comes to the kannawidan grounds and try to sell there very own delicacies or products. We also have Carnivals where children can play. Kannawidan festival also has different kind of activities such as the Saniata ti Ylocos. Saniata ti Ylocos is a beauty pageant where diffent beauties across Ilocos Sur try to grab the coveted crown of “Saniata ti Ilocos Sur” At the begging of the festival we have a grand fireworks show. Nevertheless, when the pandemic came we cannot do the things we want to do during this festival. However, our government still tries to make this festival as best as they can. 


 

           With or without the pandemic the cheerful and colorful festival we have is still the same. We may not be close to each other but the spirit of this festival is still with us. Festivals is used to be fun and grand, but with the pandemic going on, our health is what we need to focus on first. But as long as we  don’t forget the spirit of this festival, Kannawidan will always continue in our minds and hearts.

                 Every year we celebrate “Mother’s Day” in the second Sunday of May we honor this day to our mothers who raised us, carry us, and supported us up until this date. Motherhood means the state of being a mother.
